Wallaga Lake (Bridge to Entrance Flats)
The water
Planning a session at Wallaga Lake (Bridge to Entrance Flats)? This beach is in South Coast, New South Wales. Start by looking at the water close to your fishing position, then choose a species and a simple way to target it.
Find the mark at 36 degrees 23.190 minutes south, 150 degrees 4.170 minutes east. These coordinates locate the fishing spot, not a safe access route.
Structure
The mapped structure is estuary mouth sandbar. The chart depth near the usual casting position is about 2 metres below chart datum, the reference level on a marine chart. The tide changes the actual depth during your session.
Wallaga Lake (Bridge to Entrance Flats) faces east. Sheltered from west and north-west winds. Some shelter from north and east winds. Open to north-east, south-east, south and south-west winds.
Batemans Marine Park zoning applies; check FishSmart before fishing. Fish the bridge-to-entrance sand flats only; Gulaga National Park cultural areas are on the surrounding land. Entrance state varies with rain and bar dynamics.
Target species
Dusky Flathead (Platycephalus fuscus). Cast a soft plastic over sand and bring it back in short hops. Keep contact with the bottom rather than retrieving high above it.
Yellowfin Bream (Acanthopagrus australis). Let a worm bait drift naturally on a running sinker. In current, try prawns and use enough weight to control the presentation.
Tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix). Cover the edge of the wash with a metal lure and vary the retrieve. Try a pilchard bait if you cannot control your casts.
Australian Salmon (Arripis trutta). Try a slowly retrieved soft plastic from structure when conditions are calm. For surf fishing, a metal slice lets you cover a gutter.
Southern Garfish (Hyporhamphus melanochir). Set a float to present a small fish bait near the surface. Small pilchard pieces are a starting point for exploring the upper water.
How to fish it
In shallow water, give your bait or lure enough room to work without dragging it through the bottom. A gentle cast and a controlled retrieve are useful starting points. Adjust as you see how the water moves, rather than adding weight automatically.
Read the surf from dry sand before choosing a position. Stay out of rips and leave enough space between your casting area and other beach users.
Before visiting Wallaga Lake (Bridge to Entrance Flats), compare the tide with the wind and swell. Air pressure, moon and water temperature add context to your session. Catchability and fishability appear as coloured bands, but neither tells you that a place is safe to fish.
